Iftar at Prophet’s Mosque costs SR2 million per day
By Ahmad Wahaj Al-Siddiqui

MADINA – The sprawling Prophet’s Mosque is known the world over for its ambience, serenity and hospitality. The latter attribute is especially witnessed during the Iftar time when about 800,000 to a million visitors break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Several charities and philanthropists vie with each other in providing delicious and healthy breakfast to the visitors to the Prophet’s City. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al-Faleh, Deputy President of the Presidency of the Prophet’s Mosques’ Affairs, told Saudi Gazette.

The minimum expenditure on each person is SR 2.5, thus the daily expenditure on breakfast works out to SR2 million which is borne by the private sector, he said.

The presidency, he said, has allowed citizens to bring in yoghurt, dates, Saudi coffee, bread known as shreyk, a Madinite dish known as ‘duggah’ and tea for the Iftar.

Just after Asr prayer thousands of hand driven small carts on two wheels carrying baskets, cartons, thermoses of Saudi coffee and nylon rolls about a meter wide with plastic utensils enter the mosque from all sides.

The nylon rolls used as ‘sufra’ are spread over the prayer carpets to keep food stuff as allowed over it. The items of food – about 250 grams of yoghurt, a small plastic plate having sufficient dates, bread shreyk, duggah in a small plate and Saudi coffee in cups is served to each person.

In only a matter of minutes the entire mosque is furnished with ‘sufra’ having all these eatables neatly placed on them.

The Presidency supplies Zamzam water in more than 20,000 water coolers. The coolers are placed closed to each sufra.
The hosts fill the glasses with Zamzam and place it before each person.

Iftar organizers and other philanthropists make their children and others stand in front of all gates and inside the mosque to invite the arriving worshippers to break the fast on their ‘sufra’.

Women are second to none in this work. The mosque has two wings for ladies which accommodate more than 5,000 worshippers. They also arrange breakfast the same way it is arranged in the men’s section side.

The presidency has kept 2,000 workers on active duty to keep the mosque clean within 15 minutes of breaking the fast. They also move water coolers to their original places before the call for Maghrib prayer is made.

It is not all over. After the congregation prayer, the worshippers sit in groups and the hosts serve Saudi coffee to all those who want to relish the hot beverage. – SG

2 held for renting Haram prayer space
By Majed Al-Mufadhili

MAKKAH – Two persons have been arrested for reserving prayer spaces and renting them out to worshippers at Isha and Taraweeh prayer times.

Yusuf Al-Wabil of Two Holy Mosques Services Affairs said the men, both expatriate workers, were detained as authorities at the Grand Mosque stepped up their work during the final ten days of Ramadan.

“The practice has diminished a lot this year,” Al-Wabil said. “However, we will show no lenience to anyone caught.”

All persons who have been arrested for renting out prayer spaces have been foreigners, Al-Wabil said, adding that culprits are identified through a period of surveillance of individual carpets and persons claiming them beginning half an hour before the start of prayers.

Sheikh Saleh Bin Fawzan Al-Fawzan of the Board of Senior Ulema and the Permanent Committee for Ifta ruled last week that reserving prayer spaces at the Grand Mosque in Makkah or the Prophet’s Mosque in Madina was “haraam”, or forbidden.
“It is forbidden to reserve places in the mosques, unless the person has left for urgent reasons and intends to return soon, as otherwise it is tantamount to taking something by force,” Al-Fawzan told Okaz newspaper on Thursday. “It is also forbidden to rent a reserved place, and the authorities should put a stop to this vice (munkar).”

The General Presidency of Affairs of the Grand Mosque has, meanwhile, prepared areas for I’tikaf prayer on the ground floor of the Grand Mosque for 30,000 people, and two curtained sections have been allocated for women on the right side of King Fahd Gate.
The areas are provided with water, Qur’ans and loudspeakers for women to hear the seminars and fatwas. - Okaz/SG

^ Jazakallah for sharing those news stories. It's sad how some people make a business out of everything.

there is a lot of space for the jamah alhumdulillah, you can always find space..however if you want a 'comfortable' certain space..like under an air condition thingy, in a convenient corner/near the kabah/by a camera..then you 'rent' it so someone will set there whilst you go there peacefully just before prayers. its not about desparation, its about laziness

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Sheikh Shuraim slowed down his recitation more than usual subhanAllah. From past 3 years Sheikh Shuraim has really gave it all for tahajjud, even though he doesnt try to, he has been reciting just beautifully. May Allah(subhana ta3la) forgive Sheikh Shuraim, bless him and his family, grant him highest status in akhira with the Saliheen, and make his leadership a blessed one and make him lead salat in Masjid Al Haram for many years to come. May Allah make Sheikh Shuraim lead the witr salat soon. May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Ali Jaber and illuminate his grave and make it spacious one. May Allah bless all the imams of haramain ,makki wa madani wa aqsa, the deceased ones and the ones who are living by your mercy ya rabb. Ameen Thummah Ameen

Sheikh Aal Sheikh for Maghrib in Madeenah. He recites so beautiful and peaceful, Masha Allah, Sura Asr and Kawthar.

Does Madeenah always have more time between the Maghrib Athaan and Salaah than Makkah:?

Sheikh Saalih Aal Taalib for Isha... breath-taking recitation from Sura Ra'd. Small mistake at the beginning though, but all's good....

^Ameen.

I heard the sajdah tilaawah by Sheikh Juhany. What was interesting was that he didn't recite anything after standing up after the sajdah tilaawah, before going into ruku'. I didn't know that you are allowed to do that, but it sounded :shade: :D
