why we're talking about Palestine in Iran thread? this is Iranians vs Iranians, not Jews vs Arabs...
Because I was drawing a parrallel between the Palestinians who protest for their rights in Israel to the Mousavi supporters who are protesting in Iran. But then not everyone agrees with me. There are of course those who side with Ahmedinajab and would never see how his treatment of those who protest against him is just like that wicked Jewish state they hate. And that is what took us off subject. I apologize. So, let me draw a different comparison:

The brutality of those in power in quelling dissidents in Iran today reminds me of the way China responded to Tianamen Square 20 years ago.

I find it amazing that a country that declares itself to be a force for Islam should make it against the law to shout "Allahu akbar" in public. If Ahmedinajab really got the 66% of the vote that he was declared to have received, wouldn't we see larger pro-Ahmedinajabl celebrations than those for Mousavi? In the past the government could get large turnouts for all sorts of displays, and media from around the rest of the world would dutifully show it even when everyone knew it was a sham. Why aren't they producing these videos today? I suspect because they don't have enough support to even produce this sort of sham demonstration. The best they are able to do is to turn on the people and they don't want the rest of the world to see.

No, let me clarify that. They don't care what the west thinks. They don't want the rest of the Islamic world to see them for the thugs, they really are. Then they would lose the support of Muslims who would know that Iran is not the genuine Islamic state they pretend to be, for no true Muslim would do what they are doing there now.

What about camparing it to Kent state?

Yep. That would be another good comparison, and actually one I made earlier. But now both the size of the protest and level of response seems to have gotten bigger than Kent state. Also, that was the local police acting independently of the elected officials. Whereas the violent response to the protestors going on in Iran seems to be more like in China at the behest of the leaders at the very top of the government.

I'm sure the Iranien government could justify by calling on "security" like most nations - Im not sure if the top guys wanted life rounds fired as the days of mourning were called by the clergy for the people who died in the protests.

I think Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei just afraid of losing the absolute power... it has nothing to do with Islam....

Interesting view. You might be right. As I can't read Khamenei's mind, I don't really know.

I'm sure that many governments, not just Iran, would try to justify their actions. But we know the rationale for the behavior of the Iranian goverment -- they want to remain in power. So, they can justify almost anythng to themselves. Another question is do you personally find their behavior justifiable?

From Negin in Tehran:
My mobile phone kept on ringing all day long and I missed most of them because of bad connection. When I arrived home I had more than 20 messages on my answering machine. Friends from all over the world are trying to reach us to get the news and be sure of our safety. The connection is cut or that bad that we have to guess our conversations. But among the entire phone calls one was very clear and that was my mother who was asking for some computer assistance; she has recently joined the facebook and cannot stand the fact that her favorite site is filtered.
She seems to be that excited that has stopped complaining my father for following the news day and night. They both are either outside in the middle of the city or have glued to the television to follow their missing news.

Until a few days ago most of the people believed that this is just the voice of suppressed students and youngsters but now we don't believe our eyes. "No fear, no fear...we are together." This is what we all heard today from millions of people from different generation in Tehran.

When our coordinator from State television studio called me this afternoon to confirm the appointments for the next week, he asked me about the background noise. We hardly could hear each other. He has the image of a typical secret agent to me. He never takes part in any discussion at work. "I got stuck in traffic and a big crowd." This is how I replied. "I got stuck in the same thing last night and went back to the state TV and stayed over the night in my office!" I heard something different in his tone of voice. I guess he wanted to share something but hesitated. "God bless you wherever you are." He said this before hanging up.

The number of people participated in the demonstration surprised everyone but what has fascinated me is the variety of people in their outfit and social status.

At the beginning I thought this is going to be the fight between lower class and middle class but what I saw today changed my biased opinion. I saw many old and young women wearing black chador and covered from head to toe shouting and chanting among the demonstrators and joining the young girls in the front line whom were sitting on the ground in the middle of the street to stop Bassij militia walking inside the crowd. I'm happy to say that that image will never wipe away from my mind. Those women with loose colorful scarves had opened their arms ready to be killed in the front line while the others were beaten up at the other side of the street. I didn't need a tear gas; my tears were rolling down already.

People want to be heard and supported by the rest of the world. They were sending messages to the west in front of the western cameras. Appointing to Obama and Sarkozy they were demanding the free west to not to recognize this government. I saw a few women shouting: "Now it's your turn to support the democracy and human rights."

"The fear is gone; nothing seems to be an obstacle anymore, they can filter all the websites and shutdown the internet, sms service or mobile but they cannot shut our mouth." This is what I hear all the time.

Late at night everyone wants to share his/her experience with others. Telephones are none stop ringing. Sara my girl friend called me half an hour ago; she had heard the gun fire near her house and had seen many people in blood. Although she was panicked and need to talk to someone, she hanged up the phone to go to the roof to shout, and within a few minutes I heard my neighbors shouting Allaho Akbar (God is great) from their balconies.

I remember how sometimes irritated I was by hearing the loud prayer call which starts by the same phrase: Allaho Akbar and now this phrase is turned to be the most beautiful one.

After a while I called back my mother to help her out with her computer problem. She didn't answer the phone, perhaps she is on the roof too.

There are mixed views on this. It appears the majority of people believe the votes were rigged. Some believe the votes are not rigged. :/

Yeah we really dont know- Allah knows. =S mostly goverment hide the truth, innt?

Yes only Allah knows.

It could be true that the government are hiding something. Honestly I do not even know which side to support.

I am going to remain neutral and wait.

Yeah hope Iran is OK inshaAllah
so we have wait and see what is happen =[

As one monitors this sitaution, I am reminded of two things. The motto on the state flag og Virginia and the words from a speech given by Patrick Henry "Give me Liberty or Give me Death". Many of these people are ready to die if nessecary to fight the tryanny that is going on now as the government crackdown only strengthens their resolve instead of crushing it.

the protests appear to be petering out actually,,

justice is better than freedom methinks, freedom is just a part of the general principle of Justice.

Justice is always good, but freedom and liberty are equally important as well. Maybe its just an America thing...

I've seen videos on youtube about so called fraud in elections... but it's all in Farsi and I dont know the language...

I've taken side... with Mousavi...

Mousavi wont end the Islamic republic (as lots of Ahmadinejad supporters claimed). Plus, he want to give more freedom to the minorities, especially the Sunnis..

I'll support whosoever want to give some liberty for my Sunni brethren...

They have only fallen in the bad things they did to others .. Allah SWT is the Just and he is the Revenger SWT .. ( insha allah my translation into english for Allah SWT names and artibutes are correct )
