Mix Languages

Do you ever mix languages when you speak?

Like for example, instead of sayign "Im drinking water" I sometimes say "I'm drinking Panee"

And sometimes, I also add an -ed or -ing to words of other languages. Am I the only silly goose?
 
Well, in Urdu speaking people they normaly mix English. Some times its natural like main yeh Point Miss kar giya tha (I missed this point). And some times its just to show off:

Someone says "Happy Birthday to Mera (Pakistani actress).
Mera: Thank you gee, Same to you. :X

Even I do it and im not even an urdu speaker!! lol. I said "jee" to this white person the other day!!! lol

Nope.

Once my Urdu teacher said to a pupil "baulo to sahee" (say something) and the pupil replied, "I am bauling" !!!!!

That's not different language words in a sentence, but one word composed of two different languages!

At first, when I read your post, I started laughing.

...then I realized, I do it too. :phew

I think it's pretty normal if you grew up in a Western country or if you speak a lot of English at home.
 
:sl: English is my mother tongue and i have learnt some urdu but i could only speak basic simple questions that ud ask some one i do find myself messing sometimes and adding urdu words to everything

I try not to do this. Sadly in my country , many people love to mix English with Bangla. They speak in such a language ...u may say it's neither bangla nor English.

Our ex- Home Minister was famous for his mixed languages. I remember one of his famous comments : We are looking for ' Shotrus' ( enemies ).

I think , some people want to show others that they know English better than others. Also it's a kind of status symbol how good u are in English .

Those who can speak English fluently normallay get good job , good salary in my country. So , parents encourage kids to learn English. Some parents proudly tell others that how thier kids are so fluent in English and they don't know their mother tongue. I found this attitude very shameful and pathetic.

i think its funny...

cos in malaysian.... they mix it a bit and tends to be funny.

like... bodoh= stupid..

so they go like, you bodoh la..

I've done that :statisfie it was to my parent's and because I wasn't really listening to what they said, just sat in the back of the car lol, i'm not even sure they noticed. :p
 
my friend, a mum of a three year old was sweeping her garage when suddenly the daughter disappeared from her sight. so the mum asked what she was doing to which she replied, 'ma, i'm bet-hing down.' (betho = sit) she was sitting down...
 
I actually dont like it when people mix English in Urdu. They start with English and end the sentence with Urdu. I hate it. They have ruined the language. this is not to say that there are no English words in Urdu. There are. But ONLY WHEN THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE IN THE URDU LANGUAGE. For example "technology" and "programme" is used in Urdu.

But for God's sake dont mix the sentences. Ghalib would be crumbling in his grave when you do that. English is not worthy enough to flower Urdu. Its a different story when Persian is used to beautify Urdu. Persian is in a league of its own and has close ties with Urdu. But English? When did that happen? Cant let the slavery of Britishers permeate my language.
