Re: apple 'mecca'

"Mecca" is used everywhere in the world. It is meant to mean the most popular of what ever it might be:

Cafe
Music club
Car yard
Beach

Anything.

In the West, if anybody is really serious about anything what so ever, people make fun of it.

There are thousands of religious jokes. They are meant for humour not to insult. But there is a line that cannot be crossed.

There are no Muslim jokes. Not one. "Muslim Joke" is a line that cannot be crossed.

This is yet another difference between Islam and the West.

Joe, I already cited 'Mecca Bingo' and the lack of Muslim outrage at it because there's really no point. Will you please let go of your prejudices?

its the fact that they are linking it with 'makkah' as it should be spelt...

and 'pilgrimage'? :rollseyes

I know.

It's just not worth making a big melodrama about.

Re: apple 'mecca'

totally agree with you- I mean after all-that's exactly what they want us to do

I didn't begin the thread.

It is a story because a Muslim made it a story. The western press did nothing.

This is what I'm talking about. Where did I suggest that the Western press did anything?

And by 'let go of your prejudices' I mean, look past the fact that I'm Muslim, look at my entire message, and you will see that I actually agree with you that Muslims should not make a big issue out of this particular story.

Re: apple 'mecca'

I was just on the yahoo news homepage and saw a story about a "punk mecca" being shut down. This word has become fairly widespread as an adjective to describe a place that is considered important or special. I'm sure many people who use the word either 1. have no idea where the word came from or 2. make no personal connection between the "slang" use of the word and the religious use by Muslims. There is obviously no attempt to "insult" or "attack" Muslims by the use of this word, it is just part of the language lexicon now.

Well when you call a place mecca make it look like a cube and say people will make pilgrmiges who do you expect to step up?!

whatever im sick of westerners stating how we can take a joke why cant you!???

umm cos we dont all have the same low morals when it comes to our religon!?

we dont all stand there while people take the mick out of that which is dear to us!??

mothers,holy places,family,prophets even god!?

oh ha ha how funny whatever lets all just sell our morals shall we!?

stop asking dumb questions is what i say...

a muslim made an issue well stop making refrences to islam and then you wont have any **** problems!?

how many muslims do you see take offence to superman!?

we dont care what ya do with him know why!??

cos no link to mecca or islam!?

so think before asking next time why muslims make issues out of certain things!

Re: apple 'mecca'

Im surprised ur still on this forum Joe! You should be happy considering the retarded comments u present to us! If they weren't attacking or didnt "know" the connection, they must be psychic to know the Kaaba is a cube!

The finished building is not supposed to look anything like the Kaaba. It's made of glass. Check the link I posted before.

Apple called it 'Mecca' in it's advert. The word Mecca is part of the English language. There are plenty of worse places that are called Mecca, such as Mecca Bingo, essentially a Casino.

Apple did not refer to a pilgrimage or anything, that was just the article complaining about it.

its just an entrance to the underground store.
and yes.. mecca is an english language word.. doesnt mean that they are making fun of Muslims and the Kaabah.

meaning of mecca-
(1) any place that many people visit or hope to visit.
(2) A place that is regarded as the center of an activity or interest.
