The vast majority of America is rural. The population is concentrated on the East and West coasts and the Southern Coasts of the great lakes. I believe about 75% of the US population can be found in the 25-30 largest cities.

The area between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains (an area that is Roughly 2,000 by 2,000 miles) is nearly all farm land.

Alaska although not directly connected to the lower 48 states is probably one of the least populated areas in the world after Antartica and the states of Wyoming and North Dakota.

With a population of 626,932, according to the 2000 U.S. census,[1] Alaska is ranked 48th out of the 50 states. But ranked by population density, Alaska is the least densely populated at 2.849 people per square kilometer (1.1 per square mile), with the next nearest ranking state, Wyoming, at 13.208 (5.1 per square mile), and the most densely populated, New Jersey, at 2937.92 people per square kilometer (1,134.4 per square mile). source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Alaska
