Imam Ash-Shafi’ee said:

“If Allah puts a man to trial by causing him to do every prohibited thing, except ascribing partners to Allaah, then this is better than Allaah putting him to trial by misleading him into theological rhetoric.”

Imam Shafi’i said:

“If I wanted to, I could have written a large book against every opponent. However theological rhetoric is not my kind of thing, and I do not like that anything from it should be attributed to me.” [Thammul Kalaam, q/213]
 
Imam Shafi’i said:

“…If a man were to include in his will that another man should get his books of knowledge after his death, and amongst them were books containing theological rhetoric, then the books of theological rhetoric could not be included in that, since they are not knowledge.” [Thammul Kalaam, q/213]
 
Imam Ahmad said to Al-Mu’tasim during the days of his trial, “I am not a person of argumentation or theological rhetoric. I am only a person of narrations and reports.“

"Ordering good is a type of charity. Bringing about reconciliation and peace between two is a good deed, even if it is not done for the sake of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, due to the benefit that it brings for others. The people receive goodness and good. However, as for the one who brought it about, if he did that for the sake of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and seeking His pleasure, then it is good for him and he shall be rewarded. If that was not his intent, it is actually not good for him nor shall he be rewarded for it."

Sayyidna Obadah bin Swamet said: “If a pious learned man loves the rulers, he commits hypocrisy, and if he loves the rich, he commits show.” [Ihya Ulum Id-Din]
 
It has been narrated that Imaam Ahmad would close his eyes when he saw a Christian. It was asked: Why do you do this? He replied: I cannot look at the one who has invented a lie upon Allaah.

Hazrat Sufyaan bin ‘Uyaynah (rahimahullah) would say,

“Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is the true gauge of success. Every aspect of a person’s life should be compared to the mubaarak life of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), whether relating to his noble character, lifestyle, mannerisms and external appearance. Whichever aspects of one’s life conforms to the mubaarak way of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), it will gain acceptance in the court of Allah Ta‘ala, and whichever aspect opposes his mubaarak way, it will be rejected by Allah Ta‘ala.

Umar Ibn ‘Abdul Azeez was advised: “Oh Umar, beware of being the ally of Allah (SWT) in open, while being His enemy in secret. If one’s nature in open and secret do not equate then he is a hypocrite, and the hypocrites occupy the lowest level in Hellfire.”

Abu Mas’ood Al-Balkhee rh said:

“Whoever is afflicted with tragedy and he rips up a garment or pounds on his chest then it is as if he has grabbed a spear and intends to fight his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic.”

Ibn Taymiyah rh said: “Allah (SWT) is more merciful to His slaves than the most merciful of mothers to her child, for the One Who made her merciful must be more merciful than her.”

Al-Hasan Al-Basri rh said;

“People say that the one who has been on Hajj is the one who is forgiven.” He said, “And the sign of this is that he leaves the evils he used to do.”

Imaam Hassan al-Basri rahimullah said with regards to the Companions of The Prophet:
“By Allaah, they obeyed Allaah most and did numerous good deeds. Still theyfeared that their deeds might be turned down.”
He further added:
“A true Believer does good deeds and fears; a hypocrite, on the other hand, immerse himself in wrong and does not fear.”

Ibn al-Qayyim rh said:

Gratitude may be in the heart, in submission and humility; on the tongue, in praise and acknowledgement; and in the physical faculties, by means of obedience and submission.

Muhammad b. Al-Hanafīyah – Allāh have mercy on him – said:

“Whoever has self respect does not give any value to the worldly life (dunyā)”.

Imam As-Shafi’i (rahimahullah):

“Whoever does not love knowledge then there is no good in him. So there should not be any acquaintance between you and him, and nor any friendship.”

Ibn Al-Jawzee rh said:

“This worldly life only impresses those with no intellect. Similar to how vain dreams please the sleeper, imaginary games are perceived by a child, whereas a sensible person cannot be deceived by such delusion.”

Al-Hasan Al-Basri rh said:

“The believer does the best deeds yet is most fearful, that his deeds will not be accepted. If he were to spend a mountain of wealth in charity, he would not feel sure of the reward until he sees it. The more righteous and pious he becomes, the more he fears.But the hypocrite (munafiq) says, ‘There are so many people, I will be forgiven, no problem.’ So he does wrong and evil deeds, yet holds foolish wishes about Allah.”
