Things in Islam I am curious about...

When i stated proofs, i meant proofs from Qur'an or Sunnah. Therefore, if Allaah says that He created Adam with His Own Hands, we believe that to be literal. Unless the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) had stated that it is in a metaphorical form. And i don't think (from the knowledge that i have) that he ever did.

There are some groups who may say that in that verse, Allaah is referring to Hands as 'power' [i.e. Hands = Power - in the metaphorical sense] - yet that doesn't make sense, since one of the reasons why Adam is honored is because Allaah did create him (Adam) from His own hands. Yet if Allaah was referring to that verse to be 'power' [in the metaphorical sense] - then the simple response is that Allaah created everything with His power anyway. Therefore that argument doesn't really have any strength to it.

So if Allaah says He has eyes, we say - we believe. We don't question the "how's" in regard to unseen matters. I.e. How does Allaah look like. etc. That will only be clear or apparent in the hereafter.

And Allaah knows best.

:sl:

Before I answer your question Gene, I'll just say that I'm stating my own opinion and in no way knowledgeable about the topic at hand, but from logical derivation, I think its possible to come to a conclusion.

There are numerous verses in the Quran that state Allah (swt) is 'All - Seeing' or 'All Knowing' etc. Thus, we can derive from what is stated that he has eyes. However, what we perceive as eyes may be completely different from how His eyes maybe. The word 'All' signifies to the fact that he'd need more than two eyes to view the entire of humanity, because according to our human understanding, having 'eyes' mean you can only see so far and the rest is hidden from your view. (ofcourse I'm dicounting the 'x-ray', 'night', microscopic etc visions. :p) Anyway, my point being that when we visualize someone having vision, be it a frog or a dinosaur or any other living creature, we see it as being reliant on certain factors. However, from what is mentioned in the Holy Quran, the term 'All- seeing' could perhaps mean that there are no factors limiting His vision and that the boundaries of what he can see are limitless.

I do hope you understand what I'm trying to convey.

(Fellow brothers and sisters, do correct me if I've gone wrong anywhere)

:w:

So, based on the above answers, have I been INCORRECT in assuming that Muslims conceived of Allah as a spirit without a body?

As far as I understand it is not our place to try to figure out what Allah looks like... That question you just asked about a spirit without a body might be going too far...

The word 'All' signifies to the fact that he'd need more than two eyes to view the entire of humanity, because according to our human understanding, having 'eyes' mean you can only see so far and the rest is hidden from your view.

:sl:

I don't think you should say that, about the needed more than two eyes things. It is attaching a kind of physicality to Allah that is beyond what we are allowed to do...

Sister, this reply reflects my sentiments exactly. We should not try to impose humanoid features on Allah. His Nature is not something that we can understand nor should we try to create a mental image of Allah when we pray to Him. The debate is pointless about what kind of hands He has to be able create the universe, or what kind of eyes He has to be able to see everywhere at once, or what kind of ears He has to be able to hear everything.

I believe that although the universe is vast with no known outer limit, that Allah is not confined to this physical creation however immense it may be. I believe that Allah exists in another imperceptible "dimension" that is beyond our understanding of space and time.

How is this different than my previously stated concept of Allah existing in a non-material, but very real, spiritual dimension?

Perhaps we are close to saying the same thing, but perhaps not.

Please, consider Jesus' accension to Heaven. Was he transmuted into a spiritual being or did his physical body accend to Heaven to "sit at the right hand of the Father", or did he step through a "portal" so to speak to cross over into the other dimension? When he returns to earth will he be transmuted back again to a physical human form or will he just step through the "portal" to our side?

Perhaps you have some insight from the transfiguration of Jesus with the appearance of Elijah and Moses.

Actually, about a month ago I posed this question to several of my Christian friends. Does Jesus right now have a physical body in heaven?

Actually my help for it comes from how Jesus appeared to the disicples in the upper room, passing right through the locked door. Yet, when the disicples saw him at the lake of Galillee where they were fishing, he ate breakfast with them. So, Jesus was not a ghost, he could even be physically handled by Thomas, yet his resurrected body was significantly different from the type of body I have (which cannot pass through doors unless I first open them).

Some of my friends held most firmly, "Yes, of course he still has a physical body." Some, said that once out of sight that it would have been changed into what Paul speaks of in terms of a body, but a "spiritual body" which is not just a Spirit.

So, all of that is to say this I don't have enough information to feel competent enough to make a declaritory statement one way or the other. My own personal sense is that Jesus' resurrected body is not someplace that one could phyiscally put one's hands on it today. But that when we become spiritual beings ourselves, then we will have a great perceptive ability of the reality of something that is real but in a different dimension than what we are accustomed to thinking of as real right now.

So, where does that get us? Are we talking about the same thing or two different things?

This is what I have been saying about Allah being more than a Spirit.

I equate our existence in the next life to a kind of birth. Just as we had limited knowledge of the "outside world" when we were in our mother's womb so also we have limited knowledge of the Hereafter while we are this side of death.

So, where does that get us? Are we talking about the same thing or two different things?
I think we are approaching mutual understanding.

Could you comment on the presence of Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration? I believe that, according to the Bible, Elijah also accended to Heaven without dying, but Moses died before the Israelites entered the Promised Land.

WHERE IS ALLAAH?

Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) has the Attribute of Al-Uluww (Highness orTranscendence) and that is why this issue of “where is Allaah” comes under the category of Tawheedul-Asmaa was-Sifaat (Maintaining The Unity Of Allaah’s Names and Attributes).

So where is Allaah?

Allaah is present over His Mighty Throne above the seven heavens. It is not like some people think Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) is present here, there and everywhere. This is not true. Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) tells us that He is above the heavens, over His Throne. He (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) says: “The Most Gracious (Allaah) "Istawa" (rose over)[1] the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty).” [2]

And He (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) also says:

“Do you feel secure that He, Who is Over the heaven (Allaah) , will not cause the earth to sink with you, and then it should quake?Or do you feel secure that He Who is over the heaven (Allaah), will not send against you a violent whirlwind? Then you shall know how (terrible) has been My Warning.” [3]

Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) says many times in the Qur’aan: The angels arise up to Him, the angels descend, He sends down the rain, that He sent down the Qur'aan, and other such statements which make clear the belief that Allaah is separate from His creation and high above them.

Also there is the Hadeeth of Mu'awiyah as-Sahmi (Radiya ‘Llahu 'anhu) who reported: “I had some sheep which I kept between Uhud and Juwaniyyah with a slave-girl to look after them. One day, I went out to check on my sheep and discovered that a wolf had devoured one of them. Since I am just a human, (I became angry) and struck the girl. Later on, I came to the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and reported to him the incident. He terrified me with the gravity of my action. I said, 'Messenger of Allaah'! Shall I free her (as an expiation of my sin). He said 'Call her over'. When I did, he asked her, 'Where is Allaah?' She said,'Above the heavens'. Then he asked her, 'Who am I?' She said, 'The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) ordered me, 'Free her. She is a believer'.” [4]

Look carefully at this Hadeeth. Why did the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in order to determine whether the girl was a believer or not, not ask her whether she believed in Allaah (i.e. His existence)? It is because the vast majority of the people at the time of the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) believed in Allaah’s Existence but they directed their worship to other than Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) by way of intermediation. This is the danger of not believing that Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) is above His Throne separate and distinct from the creation – it leads to the worship of creation.

Also the Prophet (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) reported his eventful journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and from there up to the heavens (al-Israa wal Mi’raj).[5] The summary of that report is:
“Jibreel took me up to the lowest heaven and requested its guards to open its gate. He was asked, 'Who is this?' He answered, 'Jibreel.' 'Who is with you?,' they inquired. 'Muhammad' (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) He answered. They inquired. 'Has he been invited?' 'Yes'. Jibreel replied. Then someone greeted saying, 'He is most welcome'.” The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) continued, “when the gate was opened, I entered and met Aadam there. Jibreel said to me, 'This is your father, greet him'. Aadam greeted me back, saying: 'Welcome, pious son and pious Prophet'. Then Jibreel ascended to the second heaven and requested its guards to open its gate.” The questioning that took place in the lowest heaven was repeated before the gate was opened. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) described what he saw in every heaven, until finally he was taken up to the seventh heaven where he spoke to Allaah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) and the obligatory prayers were prescribed to him. This authentic Hadeeth speaks clearly in plain words and a straightforward manner which is not liable to misconstruction or farfetched interpretations.

I really know next to nothing about Muhammad. Can you explain his story to me?

----few Quranic verses on the Last Prophet (peace & blessing of God Almighty be upon him).

The Family of Imran

[3.144] chapter 3 , verse 144

And Muhammad is no more than an apostle; the apostles have already passed away before him;

if then he dies or is killed will you turn back upon your heels?

And whoever turns back upon his heels!s, he will by no means do harm to Allah in the least and Allah will reward the grateful.

The Clans

[33.40]

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Apostle of Allah and the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.

Muhammad

[47.2] And (as for) those who believe and do good, and believe in what has been revealed to Muhammad, and it is the very truth from their Lord, He will remove their evil from them and improve their condition.

The Victory

[48.29]

Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah, and those with him are firm of heart against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves;

you will see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, seeking grace from Allah and pleasure; their marks are in their faces because of the effect of prostration; that is their description in the Taurat and their description in the Injeel;

like as seed-produce that puts forth its sprout, then strengthens it, so it becomes stout and stands firmly on its stem, delighting the sowers that He may enrage the unbelievers on account of them; Allah has promised those among them who believe and do good, forgiveness and a great reward.

Qaf

[50.1]

Qaf. I swear by the glorious Quran (that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah.)

A serious question.
I know what the Quran is, but is there another meaning to the word?
Like Islam means submission.

Thanks

Qur'an means Recitation :)

We believe everything of the Qur'an is the word/speech of Allaah, His literal speech. But we don't question how He speaks, so we don't compare Him to humans. We don't ask the How's, but we say that He speaks in a way that befits His Majesty.

It was revealed to His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him.) Who then conveyed it to mankind i.e. through his companions - the direct recipients of the message. This has all been authentically preserved for us till today, and will remain so till the end times.

And Allaah knows best. :)

Peace.

"[SIZE=+1]Quran" - It comes from the Arabic root "qa-ra-'a" and it means "recitation."

It is best understood as "The Recitation."

The Quran is a Divine Miracle of Literature

..and it has been Preserved 100% In the Original Language - for over 1,400 years!

More than 10 million people living today (mostly non-Arabs) have memorized the Quran in the Arabic language on earth today

Is there a connection between Quran and "iqra" - the first word of revelation in the cave?

salam.

the root word is qara'a...but in arabic when u order or command people to recite, u say iqra'!...in arabic grammar it's call Fiil'amr...i did'nt know if there is any equivalent system in english grammar.
