On the authority of Abu Mas'ud 'Uqbat b. 'Amr al-Ansari al-Badri :ra: who said, "Allah's Messenger :saws: said, 'Verily, from that which people received from the first words of prophetic guidance was, 'If you are not embarrassed, then do what you want.'" Narrated by Bukhari.

In al-Fath al-Mubin, Ibn Hajar :rh: defines modesty (ar. haya'), “It is what restrains one, a fear for one's self that his doing something bad might become known.” Haya' is a natural state that one is endowed with, while experiencing it in full is something that an individual must strive for.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Advise me.” He said: “Do not get angry.” He repeated his question several times and he said: “Do not get angry.”
