Re: apple 'mecca'

I believe somebody at CNET had too much time on his hands. Look carefully at that picture and keep in mind we are talking about a 24/7 store in downtown Manhattan. Is there a single person naive enough to believe that a store as small as that block would suffice to handle the potential customer base? Look again at the store being constructed in the background. That is most likly the store. I would suspect that the large black cube is building materials under black plastic wrap for protection.

Looks like a newsreporter saw an opportunity to make an issue from a non-issue.

Like many Arabic words Makkah has worked itself into the English language as Mecca. The uncapitalized mecca simply means a point of interest. Pilgrimage in English does not equate to Hajj. In English it is simply a large group going to the same place for the same reason. Pilgramige unless called a Holy Pilgramige has no religious meaning, in English.

The store is underground. The black cube is the glass entrance under wraps, look at the link I posted to the official Apple website.

LOL everybody is too fast for me. All of them replies weren't there when I wrote the reply. I just got sidetracked and waited too long to hit the reply button.

I am noticing one huge problem, it does have to do with word connontations. there are even big differences between British, American, Canadian and Australian English. Things often have different connontations when spoken in each country.

Here for most Americans mecca has no meaning other than being a place people go to. Pilgrams are thought more in terms of the refugees that came to America in 1620. Pilgramages are any mass group of people going to the same place. You will hear of the settlement of California as being the Westward pilgramage. So for a very large portion of Americans there is very little awareness of Islam and few Americans relate Mecca and Pilgramage as having any religious significance. Although the words Makkah and Hajj would be seen as having religious significance to Muslims.

Many if not most Americans will make no connection between Mecca and Makkah or of Hajj and pilgramage.

:sl:
Wow, just goes to show how ignorant the most powerful country in the world is!. Most people it Britain do associate the word Mecca with Muslims, along with Muhammad, Allah, Mosque and now Jihad, even if they are the only things they know about Islam.

The word "mecca" in the American English lexicon has no religious significance. It is simply a slang type word to refer to a place people tend to gather. A "mecca" for hamburgers, a "mecca" for skateboarding, etc. In my opinion this is getting a little silly, surely there are more important things to worry about than what Apple computer decides to call a store.

Re: apple 'mecca'

AsalamuAlaykum,

yeah...first the name, now the structure,

Dispicable (is dat how u spell it?) indeed!

Tc, Allah (Swt) will punish the wrongdoers.

I would say most Americans will associate Muhammad, Allah(swt), Mosque and Jihad with Islam. Although now the Name Muhammad is taking on the generic meaning of being any Arab male. I would say that in one or 2 generations Muhammad will be a noun in general usage and refer to any male. Mecca and pilgramage are very much in common use. Pilgramage for a much longer period of time.

Our concept of Pilgram comes in terms of the Thanksgiving holiday and the landing of the Pilgrams at Plymouth Rock in 1620.

Pilgramage when used in a religious sense will often have different meanings for Catholics and Protestants. A Catholic will think of it in terms of a trip to either Lourdes or the Vatican and Protestants tend to think of it as a church sponsored trip to the ares of significance to Jesus(as)

Re: apple 'mecca'

:sl:
Apple called it 'Mecca' in it's advert. The word Mecca is part of the English language. There are plenty of worse places that are called Mecca, such as Mecca Bingo, essentially a Casino.

Apple did not refer to a pilgrimage or anything, that was just the article complaining about it.
:w:

As i said its not a direct insult however using mecca in such ways in this day and age should obviously be looked at with caution but again no biggie as would be....

It is quite possible the author of the CNET article did intend it as some type of dig at Islam. As It is obvious he was playing on the appearance of the glass structure while it was covered in Black. However, it is a sarcasim, dig or whatever that would be missed and not understood by most Americans.

Re: apple 'mecca'

ok whatever i dunno then. I dunno what is going on in the minds of people. No one does!
Anyways, Allah knows best!

NY Apple 'Mecca' rumored to be open 24-7

April 15, 2006 11:27 AM PDT We had really hoped to confirm recent blog reports that a massive Apple Computer store going up in midtown Manhattan, aka "Apple Mecca," will be the company's first retail outlet open 24 hours a day.

But, alas, an Apple spokesman said the company isn't ready to confirm, deny or make any official announcements about the store, so we can only offer our observations, and point to what others have written The store--which will reportedly be 25,000 square feet--is lo***ed in the underground retail plaza of the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th streets, according to a February Think Secret report. Our photographer confirmed Friday that construction is well underway on a cube-shaped above-ground entrance to the building.

By all accounts, the store is supposed to open sometime in late May, and might also be the first store to feature an iPod Bar.

We were particularly impressed with the San Francisco Chronicle Culture Blog's observation that the "Mecca's" above-ground entrance "bears an uncanny resemblance to the big black Ka'bah (AKA: The House O' Abraham) to whence all Islamic pilgrims take their grueling mandatory hajj."

Makes sense, the blog adds, "because it shall be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and hence shall be the place New Yorkers shall take a holy pilgrimage whenever they crave a new iPod Nano at 4:00 am or when they desperately need to have the Mac geeks at the Genius Bar instruct them on how to purge all the gay teen chat transcripts and German fetish porn from their iBooks before their Senate confirmation hearings."

For what it's worth, we did find Apple job postings for the Midtown store, and no mention of 24-7 work.

Re: while searching today I found this

But this is something that was hitting many petitions, Bolgs, Chain emails and Forums Six months Ago.

And i have seen this in mail and as a hyperlinked news on many Forms.

Jus imagine One thing Brother. U can do anything to make it Real.

But Truely our Creator Allah has command Over each and Every thing and if he wishes to destroy it.

He won't need any army to take it down. but the Elements of Nature itself will be more than enough

Re: while searching today I found this

:sl:
The building is actually glass. They took down those black panels as they were only meant to hide the work being done when the building was being constructed. Now it looks nothing like the Kaaba...

:salamext:

Blah, another 'try' of the unbelivers. 'tis in vain :-\

Re: while searching today I found this

Banksy should spray paint it red with white dots. Monopoly: New York!

Dibs on the car.

Re: while searching today I found this

I like the idea - Mecca, Kaba and all that, it does make sense. Anyway, if the building is in fact glass, there's no point in arguing.

Re: while searching today I found this

Are there any New 'Yawkahs' who can confirm or deny whether this place is in fact made of glass, is in fact called 'Mecca', and is in fact not one half of a gigantic pair of dice?

Re: while searching today I found this

this is the completed Building.

How much of the black covering was simply an ignorant coincidence and how much was deliberate I do not know. If any was done as mockery during the construction phase, let that be upon those who mocked, if it was accidental coincidence, forgive them for their error.

But, it is all in the past now and it is best to let it simply be remembered as poor planning.
